Armand Bayou Nature Center (ABNC) is one of the largest urban wilderness preserves in the United States with 4,000 acres of the natural wetlands forest, prairie, and marsh habitats once abundant in the Houston and Galveston area. ABNC is home to over 370 species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians and offers hiking trails, exhibits, field trips, Scout programs, birding, a historic farm, and fun for all. ABNC’s nonprofit mission is twofold: To preserve the habitats with which we have been entrusted; and to provide opportunities for people to experience and understand the local ecosystem.
Part-Time Educator
Armand Bayou Nature Center is seeking candidates for a part-time educator position. The educator will work with the ABNC education team to lead programs that connect people, especially children, to nature. An understanding of ecosystems and passion for teaching will be advantageous.
Activities/Duties May Include:
Leading field trips
Guiding scout workshops and hikes
Leading nature-themed birthday party activities
Preparing instructional materials and learning spaces
Handling live reptiles
Qualifications:
An ability to work with all ages: small children through adults
Comfortable leading groups indoors and outdoors
Be enthusiastic about connecting people with nature
Available for flexible/changing hours, including weekends
High school diploma or above
A love for nature
A willingness to be flexible in a quickly changing environment
Will need to pass a background check and complete training related to child protection and safety
Wages/Benefits
$10-12/hour

Stewardship Technician - Heavy Equipment Operator
Armand Bayou Nature Center is seeking candidates for the position of Technician/Heavy Machine Operator. The Technician will perform a range of duties at the Nature Center as needed. Reporting to the Conservation Director, the Technician will primarily assist with the implementation of the ABNC Natural Resource Management Plan. Duties include habitat restoration, invasive species control, prescribed fire, native plant propagation, planting, and wildlife management. This position requires someone who is a self-starter, maintains safety at all times, and can work independently most of the time.
Activities will include:
The majority of the week will be spent operating heavy and light equipment for land management purposes.
40-hour work week (outdoors).
Heavy lifting (more than 50 pounds).
Mowing with a John Deere 5100E.
Land clearing with a Caterpillar 299XE.
Chain sawing and felling large trees.
Raking and clearing fallen branches, leaf litter, and debris.
Mowing and weeding.
Removing vines and trees from fence lines.
The position may also assist with volunteer work groups in support of the above activities.
Qualifications:
Extensive experience with heavy machinery, such as tractors with large mow decks and skid steers with
Hydraulic attachments – nonnegotiable.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Current driver’s license.
Willing and able to pass drug and alcohol testing.
A love for nature.
A positive attitude.
An inclusive mindset.
A willingness to be flexible in a quickly changing environment as emergent needs arise.
Wages/Benefits:
$15-$18 per hour depending on experience.
