ABNC is thrilled to introduce our all-new Insect Pinning Workshop, a 2 part, step-by-step masterclass in the delicate art of insect preservation.

Led by ABNC’s knowledgeable instructors, you will step inside the fascinating world of entomology. You’ll learn how to handle, position, and preserve insect specimens from start to finish. This workshop is perfect for curious beginners, backyard naturalists, artists, and anyone with a passion for the beauty of the wild.

Note: This is a two-part workshop, and attendance at both sessions is required to complete your project.

 

How It Works:

After checking in at the front desk, you’ll take a short walk to our environmental learning center. When you arrive at the environmental learning center, your instructor will begin by explaining the insect pinning tools, the parts of an insect, and integral pinning techniques. Then, you will be guided through the process of pinning your very own ethically sourced insect. After the pinning and positioning are complete, you will leave the specimen at ABNC for 7 days, returning on the same day the next week. The second session will be shorter, allowing for the needed time to select a shadowbox, a fabric backing, and pin the insect to its permanent display. After the display has been completed, you are welcome to take your specimen home!

 

What We Provide

We supply all the tools and materials you need to create a wonderful display. Your registration fee covers:

  • Your Ethically Sourced Specimen (Beetle, butterfly, or moth depending on seasonal availability)

  • Pinning Board & fabric backing

  • Insect Pins (Designed specifically for preservation)

  • Tweezers for delicate posing and positioning

  • A Shadowbox to safely transport, protect, and display your finished piece on your wall at home.

Know before you go:

  • This program is for ages 14 and up. Children under 18 must be accompanied & supervised by an adult. If the adult wants to participate, they must also register.

  • This is a 2-Part program. To complete the project, guests must attend BOTH sessions.

  • Closed-toe shoes are required for all programs. (No Sandals, Slides, Crocs, etc.)

  • Please bring a reusable water bottle.

  • We recommend that you bring insect repellent, a hat, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing as needed for the weather.

  • Pinning Supplies will be provided.

Cancellations:

Payment of fees is needed to complete your registration and is non-refundable unless the program/class/activity is cancelled by Armand Bayou Nature Center (ABNC) staff. If ABNC cancels for any reason, you will be given the option of applying the fees to another program or a refund. A minimum number of four people is required for the class to be held. You will be notified the day prior if the minimum number has not been reached.

If you must cancel, please notify ABNC at least seven (7) days prior to the program/class/activity. If you inform us at least one week before, we will issue you a credit voucher for the full amount of your payment that may be applied to another ABNC program fee or a membership. Any non-attendance or cancellation less than seven (7) days will result in the full charge of the fee. ABNC does not give cash refunds.
