Wetlands - What They Are

Wetlands are basically in-between zones that have characteristics of both land and water habitats. Wetlands are also known by such names as swamps, marshes and bogs. Wetlands do not have to remain wet all the time to function as a wetland.

There are many types of wetlands. Wetlands can be further defined by the distribution of the water, the type of plants and the type of soil. Wetlands can also be defined by where they are located.

Wetlands habitats are like neighborhoods. They include all of the land and the many types of plants and animals that live in that ecosystem or habitat. These habitats provide what the plants and animals need to live.
